Good afternoon,

I need your help.

Earlier this year, I promised to speak at a high school’s graduation somewhere in the United States. To be considered, we asked schools to tell us how they achieve three important criteria:

  • Set a positive example for other high schools around the Country;
  • Engage students in learning and foster personal responsibility and academic excellence; and
  • Prepare students to graduate college to help meet my 2020 goal that America have the highest proportion of college graduates of any nation in the world.

We’ve narrowed down more than 1,000 entries to six finalists that each have a three-minute video and short essay you can review and rate. From now until Thursday, anyone can participate. Once the voting is over, I’ll choose the winner from the top three.

Check out the six finalists:

We’re calling this process the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge, and it’s just the beginning. I’m planning to speak at a high school graduation every year I’m in office to keep the focus on our commitment to our Nation’s schools, and to motivate teachers, principals, and students to keep improving.  And of course lifting up American education will take parents getting more involved in their child’s education.

This is also an opportunity to discover and highlight schools like these six finalists: excellent examples of the kinds of effective approaches to teaching and learning that I know are happening around the country.

Let me know what you think of the choices:

Thank you,
President Barack Obama

P.S. The deadline is Thursday at midnight EDT, so take a moment to give your input on these six deserving finalists:

Google searches is a one man game; and google discrimates against women in search engines based on algorithms. In mathematics, computer science, and related subjects, an algorithm is an effective method for solving a problem using a finite sequence of instructions. Google truncates the number of characters for first names in google searches, it is less space consuming. For example, if you were to google any last surname you are more likely to get the name Mike rather than Michelle. Google algorithms work very similar to slot machines regarding statistics. You are more likely to win on a slot machine if you are a woman, 30 % of the time you will win. However, when you google a surname a masculine first name is most likely to win over 80 percent of the time. The point now is how these machines work. PARS (Program and Reel Strips) sheets, which are blueprints of the machines determine winners on slots. Contrary to popular myth, the outcome of each round at the slot machine is determined by random numbers, and each play is completely independent. Just because you win this time does not symbolify you will lose the next time purposely by machine. Information of the reel stripping and probabilities of each win are sometimes printed on small cards and posted on the machines. The following information is from a ‘Red, White and Blue’ machine. The following is the pay table. For new gamblers, 3 bar is in blue, 2 bar is in white and 1 bar is in red. After the gambler slots in their bets, the spin button is pressed by him/her and the slot machine selects three random numbers, one for each reel. These are chosen from a random number generator that generates random numbers at a rate of thousands per second. The numbers are selected the moment the spin button is pressed. When the bet has been placed but the button has not been pressed, the generators are already generating thousands of the numbers. Once the button is pressed, the numbers are reached.
You can conduct your on scientific study on the discrimination of woman in search engines by googling surnames from a phone book. Go through the first 10 pages of google per surname and calculate the ratio of men to women. The results will show a mathmatical factor of discrimination.
‘The Landrith Google Study’ was conducted by Tina Landrith-Mills on over 1000 surnames and the findings are that Google clearly discriminates against women in google searches. Whether you want to call it search engine optimization or discrimination … someone is behind the numbers hard coding.

Master Builders for Christ and Vision Builders Christian Center, along with three of its principals, have been charged in a 21-count indictment in Delaware, on charges of running a massive mortgage rescue scam.

Warrants have been issued for the arrest of Jamaar Manlove, Larry Manlove, and Rhonda Manlove, and racketeering liens have been placed on their assets. Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden says the case is believed to be one of the largest mortgage rescue fraud indictments in the state’s history.

The indictment alleges that Jamaar Manlove ran a criminal enterprise involving theft, money laundering, and forgery in which he preyed on vulnerable homeowners who faced imminent foreclosure.

In these scams, struggling homeowners are convinced to sell their homes to third parties to avoid foreclosure, based on the false promise that they can repurchase their homes through a complex sale/lease-back arrangement when their financial situations improve. In reality, this never happens.

Instead, these schemes impose huge hidden fees that take thousands of dollars of equity away from homeowners, and they ultimately lose their homes, unable to obtain financing to repurchase their home.

It’s not clear what role the organizations played in the alleged scheme, but both are described as Christian real estate operations. In the past, many so-called “affinity scams” have taken advantage of the victims’ and perpetrator’s shared beliefs to generate trust, trust that ultimately proves to be misplaced.

“Those who take advantage of vulnerable homeowners under extreme financial duress or facing foreclosure should be on notice,” Biden said. “We will track you down, prosecute you, and put you behind bars.”

The indictment follows a 10-month investigation by the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Unit and includes charges of criminal racketeering, conspiracy, money laundering, felony theft, forgery, and failure to file taxes. If convicted on all counts each defendant faces a minimum of two years in prison. Jamaar Manlove faces a maximum of 83 years in prison if convicted on all counts.

Biden said the case is the direct result of the collaborative work of the Delaware Attorney General’s Mortgage Fraud Task Force, which was formed in June 2009 to reduce foreclosures and foreclosure-related fraud statewide.

state of the union

Everyday I read the feedback through your post and I cannot help to be impressed with how well educated you are about the world. I learn something from you everyday … alot of things actually. Some post make me laugh and I love that very much.
The world is an interesting place and as I circle the globe via the web scouting news I am starting to form some thoughts of my own about things like uranium, religion, bioterrorism, beer, and a number of other topics that are consistent to locations in the world. All I can say at this point is that I am gratiful to be American and to live in California where the sun usually shines and we are progressing the world along by fighting for gay civil rights. I feel lucky to be able to sit in my home, drink bottled water and blog about things like ‘breaking the news barrier’ in places like Iran or China …. I realize in many countries I would be imprisoned for blogging … that is how lucky I am.

If you have not done so yet … bookmark this site and make it a place you visit everyday. Interact and mingle with other users … share this site with your loved ones and friends … let see if we can “break the news barrier” together. Peace.

iran and internet
TEHRAN (Reuters) – Iran’s supreme leader accused the United States Tuesday of trying to use the Internet as a tool to confront the Islamic Republic, declaring that such a policy only showed Washington’s frustration.

Last week, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton challenged Beijing and other governments to end Internet censorship, placing China in the company of Iran, Saudi Arabia and others as leading suppressors of on-line freedom.

The Internet has become a battleground during domestic turmoil in Iran after June’s disputed election, with the authorities blocking access to some opposition websites and pro-reform Iranians using it to spread word of new protests.

Government officials have portrayed the opposition protests that erupted after the presidential poll as a foreign-backed bid to undermine Iran’s Islamic system of government.

“The Americans have said that they have allocated a $45 million budget to help them to confront the Islamic Republic of Iran via the Internet,” state television quoted Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as saying in a speech.

“This decision shows the height of the enemy’s frustration. They have spent tens of billions of dollars in the past (in confronting Iran), but have achieved no results,” he said.

The U.S. Senate voted in July to adopt the Victims of Iranian Censorship Act which authorizes up to $50 million for expanding Farsi language broadcasts, supporting Iranian Internet and countering government efforts to block it.

Iran has accused the West of waging a “soft” war against the Islamic state with the help of intellectuals and others inside the country.

The United States cut ties with Iran after its 1979 Islamic revolution, which toppled the U.S.-backed Shah. Tehran and Washington are now at odds over Iran’s disputed nuclear work.

“FRUITLESS PLOTS”

Khamenei said the United States had been planning to orchestrate “riots” in Iran, an apparent reference to post-election unrest.

“America and Israel were and still are the most hostile of the enemies of the Islamic system and the Iranian nation,” he said. “All America’s plots and efforts during the past 30 years were fruitless and I’m surprised that they didn’t learn a lesson from the past,” Khamenei added.

The reformist opposition says the June poll was rigged to secure hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s re-election. The authorities deny the charge of election fraud.

The vote plunged Iran into deep internal turmoil and exposed widening establishment divisions. Despite Khamenei’s endorsement of Ahmadinejad’s election victory, opposition supporters have continued to stage sporadic protests.

Underlining the authorities’ tough stand on dissent, national police chief Esmail Ahmadi-Moghaddam earlier this month warned the opposition against using text messages or emails to organize fresh anti-government protests.

Lacking newspapers, the opposition has used the Internet and other means of communication to spread the word about rallies. Internet messages have been circulating about protests on February 11, when Iran marks the anniversary of the 1979 Islamic revolution.
