CNN, which bills itself as “the most trusted name in news,” gets some support for that claim from a new survey. But the poll done by “60 Minutes” and Vanity Fair shows Fox News a close second in trustworthiness.
Pollsters asked a random sample of 1,026 people nationwide which of the following they consider to be the most trustworthy source of daily news in the United States: CNN, Fox News, other major broadcast networks, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal or Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show.” MSNBC was not among the options given.
Six in 10 viewers picked one of the two cable news rivals, with 32 percent for CNN and 29 percent for Fox. Only 13 percent selected other networks, while 8 percent named the Times and 7 percent preferred the Journal. Comedian Jon Stewart’s show was rated most trusted by only 4 percent.
“The numbers are staggering, and continue to prove that cable news has a relationship with viewers that is more comfortable and trusting than the other forms of news dissemination,” said Mediaite’s Steve Krakauer.
The poll highlights a clear difference in the political leanings of CNN and Fox fans. Fifty percent of Republicans voted for Fox, and 46 percent of Democrats said they trust CNN most. Still, 12 percent of Democrats favored Fox and 22 percent of Republicans preferred CNN.
Two days before the survey results were released, President Barack Obama urged University of Michigan graduates to expose themselves to a variety of news sources.
“… if you’re someone who only reads the editorial page of The New York Times, try glancing at the page of The Wall Street Journal once in a while. If you’re a fan of Glenn Beck or Rush Limbaugh, try reading a few columns on the Huffington Post website,” Obama advised in his commencement address Saturday. “It may make your blood boil; your mind may not be changed. But the practice of listening to opposing views is essential for effective citizenship.”
Slate’s William Saleton followed up on the president’s appeal with this list of 10 ways to escape a partisan echo chamber.
The Dot Com Comeback
A Message from President Obama
Good afternoon,
I need your help.
Earlier this year, I promised to speak at a high school’s graduation somewhere in the United States. To be considered, we asked schools to tell us how they achieve three important criteria:
- Set a positive example for other high schools around the Country;
- Engage students in learning and foster personal responsibility and academic excellence; and
- Prepare students to graduate college to help meet my 2020 goal that America have the highest proportion of college graduates of any nation in the world.
We’ve narrowed down more than 1,000 entries to six finalists that each have a three-minute video and short essay you can review and rate. From now until Thursday, anyone can participate. Once the voting is over, I’ll choose the winner from the top three.
Check out the six finalists:

We’re calling this process the Race to the Top Commencement Challenge, and it’s just the beginning. I’m planning to speak at a high school graduation every year I’m in office to keep the focus on our commitment to our Nation’s schools, and to motivate teachers, principals, and students to keep improving. And of course lifting up American education will take parents getting more involved in their child’s education.
This is also an opportunity to discover and highlight schools like these six finalists: excellent examples of the kinds of effective approaches to teaching and learning that I know are happening around the country.
Let me know what you think of the choices:

Thank you,
President Barack Obama
P.S. The deadline is Thursday at midnight EDT, so take a moment to give your input on these six deserving finalists:

Google searches is a one man game; discrimination of women
Google searches is a one man game; and google discrimates against women in search engines based on algorithms. In mathematics, computer science, and related subjects, an algorithm is an effective method for solving a problem using a finite sequence of instructions. Google truncates the number of characters for first names in google searches, it is less space consuming. For example, if you were to google any last surname you are more likely to get the name Mike rather than Michelle. Google algorithms work very similar to slot machines regarding statistics. You are more likely to win on a slot machine if you are a woman, 30 % of the time you will win. However, when you google a surname a masculine first name is most likely to win over 80 percent of the time. The point now is how these machines work. PARS (Program and Reel Strips) sheets, which are blueprints of the machines determine winners on slots. Contrary to popular myth, the outcome of each round at the slot machine is determined by random numbers, and each play is completely independent. Just because you win this time does not symbolify you will lose the next time purposely by machine. Information of the reel stripping and probabilities of each win are sometimes printed on small cards and posted on the machines. The following information is from a ‘Red, White and Blue’ machine. The following is the pay table. For new gamblers, 3 bar is in blue, 2 bar is in white and 1 bar is in red. After the gambler slots in their bets, the spin button is pressed by him/her and the slot machine selects three random numbers, one for each reel. These are chosen from a random number generator that generates random numbers at a rate of thousands per second. The numbers are selected the moment the spin button is pressed. When the bet has been placed but the button has not been pressed, the generators are already generating thousands of the numbers. Once the button is pressed, the numbers are reached.
You can conduct your on scientific study on the discrimination of woman in search engines by googling surnames from a phone book. Go through the first 10 pages of google per surname and calculate the ratio of men to women. The results will show a mathmatical factor of discrimination.
‘The Landrith Google Study’ was conducted by Tina Landrith-Mills on over 1000 surnames and the findings are that Google clearly discriminates against women in google searches. Whether you want to call it search engine optimization or discrimination … someone is behind the numbers hard coding.
